Since many of you are having a hard time with this assignment, I guess it might be a good idea to take a minute and think about why rhetorical analysis is important.  Why do you think we spend the time and effort we do to understand rhetorical analysis?  How do you see yourself using this type of analysis in the future (not just school, but life too)?

Engl101brown/11:1 24-OCT-97 14:10 Adriana F. Paredes (aparedes)

I thinck rhetorical analysis is important because it is being use all the time.  They use it in comersials, movies, and ads.  It is also important because if there is a job you really want to get you need to know how to persuead them to choose you.  You need to know who the audience are.  This is why rhetorical analysis is important.  It is used everyday.

Engl101brown/11:2 25-OCT-97 18:01 Christine Ella Gonzalez (cegonzal)

I never really thought about it but the rhetorical essay is important in many ways.  The main one is that we need to know how to appeal to others senses so we can make them understand our views.  We need to be able to show them that we have background education in what we are talking about.  Without even relizing it, we use it everyday!

Engl101brown/11:3 26-OCT-97 13:03 Sanjeev Khunkhun (skhunkhu)

I think rhetorical analysis is important because a person should be able to realize how they are being influenced by others or persuaded by others.  I think once a person can do  this then that person is better able to decide for themselves if they should be persuaded or not.  Otherwise, the rhetorical analysis strategies used can block a person's mind from actually thinking about the issue.  Does that even  make sense?

Being able to identify rhetorical analysis is important because if we could not we would be subject to even the most rediculous whims of others.  It can also be used to your advantage in circumstances like job interviews and getting people to do what you want.  I think this is why we spend so much time trying to identify it.

Hi!
Rhetorical analysis is important because it enables one to think in a more rational way. By this I mean that sometimes we believe something because we were taught to or because that's all we've been presented with. BUT rhetorical analysis forces you to look at a differing viewpoint at least a little bit. It forces you to re-evaluate the beliefs you may already have too. It makes you think about why you were convinced to believe something, and sometimes, whether your beliefs are adequately supported.

Engl101brown/11:6 28-OCT-97 9:25 Jeffrey Koester (jkoester)

By understanding rhetorical stratagies and how they are used, we can become better at making our views and arguements appeal to various audiences.  Once you understand what appeals to your target audience, you can more effectively make an appeal to that audience.  This could be valuable for things such as advertising, understanding politacal issues, as well as everyday arguements.

Learning how to understand and write rethorical analysis is very important to life because when you read an article or see an ad in a magazine you want to be able  to understand what it wants you to believe or buy or do.  You want to be able to understand why it is makeing you lean to one side over another.  Also when you know how to write it then you get the full understanding of what the ad or article is really saying.

Understanding rhetorical strategies is important because when you read stories or see ad's in the future, you'll be aware of what the author is doing to get what they want.  I think it will be good to know how to use rhetorical stratagies for future use in our careers.

Rhetorical analysis is important, because it helps us evaluate the reliability of our sources.  When we read something, we can now look at it and ask:  "Why do I agree with this article?  Is it just trying to appeal to my pathos?  Is it giving me any facts or even citing sources?".  Being able to analyze writing strategies makes us more of an individual and a more critical audience.  Some people mentioned it might help in a job interview, I don't see why.  When I think of Rhetorical analysis I think of propaganda, and the government trying to suck us idiots into doing things we don't want to.  If a poster is telling us to hate a certain race, and trying to get us to fight a war over it, we can know that all it's doing is appealing to our pathos.  We can know it is useless and ignore it.

I think every day we use rhetorical analysis.  When we look at a magazine ad, or watch tv we use it without realizing it( a natural reflex).  When we see these things we say to ourselves-are they talking to me, and what are they tryingto tell me?    By doing it in class, and having to think about it we improve our skills even more. Class exposes us to new ways to use it, so that once we come across it in the real world we will know how to handle it.

Engl101brown/11:11 29-OCT-97 8:40 Hosanna Kakarala (hosanna)

I think that Rhetorical analysis is just such a big part of the language and interpretation of it.  People use it all the time to reveal the underlying thoughts and assumptions in every conversation they have.  It is important later too because it is a useful way to know how to talk to a certain person, using emotional or logical appeal and knowing how the reaction would be like. It will also help us identify it when others use it to get your attention.

Learning how to rhetorically analize works has helped me in another class I am taking currently, T&C 102.  In this class we read literature by other authors and we have to analyze the message they are trying to get across.  On the exams for this class we have to write essays.Part of the essays call for rhetorically analizing the work.  But rhetorical analysis helps me in everything I read now, for example ads in magazines.  Now I can analyze the strategies the ads use to manipulate the audience to sell a product.

Rhetorical Analyses are made everyday when we think about a commercial or read a book , or anything that makes you think about how this wil affect you or people you know.  this may sound stupid, but once i realized what analyzing meant, every movie I watch comes with an analysis now! Weird, but true.

Engl101brown/11:14 29-OCT-97 16:23 olga urcadez (oiu)

I had never really thought about rhetorical analysis, but knowing all the strategies made me realize that it is very important.  Everyday we always face some kind of rhetorical analysis, especially when we are watching T.V.  And everytime I see a commercial I can tell which rhetorical strategies they are using.

Engl101brown/11:15 30-OCT-97 3:52 JoyAnn Rudd (joyann)

I think that rhetorical analysis is important in our everyday life because sometimes we need to look at something that someone is telling us and know why.  Like if someone is trying to sell us something, we need to be able to think about what he/she is saying, why they are saying it, and what they intend to gain form it.

Engl101brown/11:16 30-OCT-97 9:05 Angela Sanchez (sancheza)

I think that it is very important to learn rhetorical anaylisis. It enables us to think in a more logical way. Also, we learn how to persuade people by seeing how others persuade. For me, learning rhetorical analysis has helped me in my public speaking, communication, and my philosophy classes. Right now, all these classes are focusing on rhetoric and persuasion! So, I get good grades on all the tests!

Engl101brown/11:17 30-OCT-97 9:21 Stephen C. Waldo (scwaldo)

I think the most important reason for us to know how to write and analyze rhetorical strategy is that it will help us learn to use rhetorical strategy.  This is very important because it can help develop arguments throughout our lives.  I know I will need this because everything I do in life is going to require that I persuade somebody or defend our own position on something.  This requires a knowledge of what strategies to use and how and when to use them

Engl101brown/11:18 30-OCT-97 9:56 Christine Masenga (masenga)

Rhetorical strategies are used all the time, you just never realized it until we had to do this essay.  People use it in all forms of advertising.  People are always trying to persuade you one way or another and they have different strategies of doing it.  I think it is important to understand rhetorial strategies and they prove to be an important part of our lives.  Whether we want to deal with or not.

Engl101brown/11:19 30-OCT-97 14:10 Keoni Beau DeRenne (keoni)

being able to write a rhetorical analysis will help us to communicate with a specific audience. if we were to write to our boy/girlfriend, the style in which we would write would be different than if we were to write to a president of a major corporation. we analyze how words are being used not just taking it for what it says. kind of loking for a deeper meaning. this is a good way of persuasion as well, but in the same way. i'm sure if i were to become a lawyer you would need to be able to use rhetorical strategy in order to plead your case. its everywhere and we sometimes don't realize it.

Rhetorical ananlysis is very important because it is being used in the world today alot.  For example, car dealerships are using rhetorical devices like using a good looking woman to buy the car or fast food chains are using them by howing a big juicy burger which in real life isn't true.  Rhetorical ananlysis will help me in the future to understand different kinds of strategies.  This section of the english ws hard, but I understnad it.

Engl101brown/11:21 30-OCT-97 18:47 Sonya Huh (shuh)

I think that rhetorical analysis is important because it really makes you understand different strategies used by people to appeal the audience.  I really learned how to analyze the strategies, and it opened my eyes to the truth about things.  This essay is really useful to life, and the main idea about rhetorical analysis is constantly used in daily life.  For instance, I never realized the different strategies used in advertisements.  It's crazy how many different ways are used to persuade people.  I've also learned strategies to use in trying to persuade people.  This unit really taught me a lot.

Engl101brown/11:22 30-OCT-97 21:05 Nick Gehlert (gehlert)

Knowing the concepts of a rhetorical analysis is very important in the world today.  If you truly understand the concept, you can see why certain things are showed the way they are.  They are like this for a reason.  They may be trying to reach a certain audience.  You can see this if you know how they are doing or the reasons behind why they are doing it.  Also, you will know how to persuade people better if you know the methods used to accompish this.  Overall, it is a great concept to know and I value it now that I do know how it is done.

Engl101brown/11:23 30-OCT-97 21:25 Alison Parker (aparker)

one way that one can use rhetorical analysis is during elections.  For instance, the presidential elections have televised debates where both canidates answer the same questions.  the audience, which is mainly mid-class america, are then able to listen to both sides and see who or what they agree with.  its important that one learns both sides so that they are not brainwashed into thinking one thing that they may have been taught.  its sad to see children who believe something because their parents taught them one side of THEIR belief.  people should gather plenty of information on a subject before they decide what it is they believe.

Engl101brown/11:24 31-OCT-97 2:42 john michael Graves (gravesj)

I think it is important to use rhetorical analysis in life because you never want to go into a situation knowing only one side of a story.  It is always important to look at the up's and down's of any situation in life.  People are always trying to appeal to one's emptions to persuade them to their side.  Being able to take a look at any situation level-headed will allow you to make better decisions about things in life.
